LG Energy Solution Announces Plan for Free Replacement of Certain Energy Storage System (ESS) Home Batteries

The free replacement program covers ESS Home Batteries containing cells manufactured between April 2017 and September 2018, and expands existing replacement programs underway in certain markets. LG Energy Solution will cover the costs related to this replacement program.

LG Energy Solution has announced the free replacement program following reports from the field about overheating incidents linked to certain ESS Home Batteries. LG Energy Solution will undertake inspections and replacement of the potentially affected ESS Home Batteries and will also implement safety-enhancing upgrades for the battery management and control software. In conducting this voluntary replacement program, LG Energy Solution is fully cooperating with the responsible product safety authorities in relevant markets.

Replacement Scope and Details

LG Energy Solution, after reviewing its manufacturing and quality assurance processes, has determined that there may have been issues in the early production processes for the electrodes in some of its battery cells. As a result, in rare cases, some ESS Home Batteries containing cells manufactured during the specific period subject to the replacement program may overheat when exposed to harsh external environments.

As a precautionary measure, LG Energy Solution's replacement program will provide free replacement batteries which incorporate manufacturing process improvements that are designed to further enhance the safety of ESS Home Batteries. LG Energy Solution, in cooperation with its partners, will contact potentially affected customers to arrange for the replacement, and all proposed precautionary safety measures will take place following such consultation with customers.

Where possible and before the replacement is completed, LG Energy Solution will also implement - out of precautionary reasons - remote modifications to the potentially affected ESS Home Batteries to reduce the potential for overheating until replacement is complete. In addition, LG Energy Solution will update the battery diagnostic and control software for all replacement batteries. Field inspections will also be undertaken to monitor and minimize the potential for further incidents.

Owners of potentially affected ESS Home Batteries will be contacted directly. In order to determine whether your ESS Home Battery is within the scope of the free replacement program, please visit https://www.lgessbattery.com/eu/home-battery/checkSN.lg and search for your product's Serial Number. If your Serial Number is eligible for replacement, please contact the relevant LG Energy Solution Customer Care Centre (see below for regional contact details) or your ESS Home Battery installer to arrange for an inspection and replacement of your ESS Home Battery. Instructions on how to find your product's Serial Number can be found in "Appendix A" below.

Appendix A - How to locate your ESS Home Battery's Serial Number

For ESS Home Battery models RESU7H and RESU10H:

The serial number label is located behind the access door of the ESS Home Battery.

For ESS Home Battery models RESU3.3, RESU6.5, RESU10, and RESU13:

i. Look to the right-hand side of the battery

ii. In some cases, you may find that the serial number label is partially obscured by battery cables and/or conduit. In that case, you can either photograph and transcribe it manually or, if your smart-phone has QR capture, direct it at the QR code to capture the code as text.

If you are unable to determine the battery's Serial Number due to it being covered by cables, DO NOT attempt to dismantle the battery or cabling for easier access to the serial number. Instead,

1. check the documentation provided by your battery installer to see whether your installer included your battery's serial number; or

2. contact your battery installer to check their internal records for your battery's Serial Number; or

3. arrange a site visit for your battery installer or a qualified electrician to check the Serial Number. Please direct them to contact LG Energy Solution prior to their visit so we can provide technical guidance and arrange payment for their time; or

4. Contact LG Energy Solution to arrange an inspection and (if applicable) a free replacement of your battery.
